“The UAE Enforces Tough Law Against Promotion of Drug Images on Clothes and Cars”

Under Federal Decree Law No. 30 of 2021 on Combating Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances, individuals wearing clothes or displaying stickers on their cars featuring drug-related images, such as the marijuana leaf, can face legal consequences. The UAE law also addresses the possession of products that promote the use of illegal substances through images or text.

The UAE has taken a strong stance against the promotion of drug-related images on clothes and cars, imposing penalties that can include a fine of up to Dh50,000 and even imprisonment in certain cases. Law enforcement agencies, including the Dubai Police’s Hemaya International Centre, have issued warnings against such displays, emphasizing their prohibition under UAE law. Colonel Abdullah Al Khayat, Director of Hemaya International Centre, highlights that while some individuals may view these displays as trivial or a form of personal freedom influenced by foreign culture, they contradict the UAE’s social and religious values.

According to Colonel Al Khayat, the UAE has explicitly banned behaviors involving drug promotion, and it is essential for people to be aware of this legal restriction. What may be permissible in other countries does not necessarily align with the UAE’s regulations. Col Al Khayat referred to a study conducted by a US-based addiction center, which suggests that young individuals can develop curiosity and a desire to consume drugs when exposed to their favorite celebrities or influencers engaging in such activities. The study highlights that approximately 75 percent of teenagers who view images of peers smoking hashish, drinking alcohol, or wearing drug-related clothing are encouraged to imitate them.

Alarmingly, many children in the survey had encountered such images or videos before the age of 16. Col Al Khayat further emphasized that teenagers exposed to such media are four times more likely to consume marijuana and other drugs compared to those who have not been exposed.

The UAE has implemented strict penalties for individuals who wear or use clothes and products displaying pictures of drugs, according to legal adviser Mohammed Najeeb. Recent amendments in the UAE’s legislation directly address such practices, with offenders facing a fine of Dh5,000. Repeat offenders could potentially face imprisonment for up to two years. These measures underline the UAE’s commitment to combatting the display of drug-related images and aim to discourage individuals from engaging in such activities. The amendments serve as a clear reminder that such actions are not taken lightly within the UAE’s legal framework.

As per the law, individuals involved in producing, importing, selling, possessing, or promoting products or publications displaying images, drawings, or texts that encourage drug-related crimes can be subject to a minimum fine of Dh50,000.

Furthermore, those who wear or use such clothes or products face a fine of Dh5,000 and can be sentenced to up to two years in jail for repeat offenses. Authorities have urged the community to remain vigilant and raise awareness, particularly among young individuals, about the legal provisions and consequences outlined in the law.

To ensure compliance with all rules and regulations concerning drug abuse, it is crucial to stay informed. For more detailed information, we invite you to sign up on our website.
